What is Bluetooth? I am sure you have used the Bluetooth on your mobile phone or computer or some other device. But do you really know what Bluetooth is and how does it work?
What is Bluetooth?
So let first answer to the question what is Bluetooth. It is a technology for a wireless communication that enables convenient connection of your devices with other devices. The main goal of the Bluetooth is not only a simple connection between various devices, but also seamless communication between devices, local applications and cloud.
The Bluetooth Name
Jim Kardach developed system for the Bluetooth communication between mobile phones and computers. At this time he was reading the book about the Vikings and their king Harald Bluetooth. The world Bluetooth is English version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann.
I already mentioned that Bluetooth connects different devices. The devices that support the Bluetooth file transfer are the following:
- Mobile phones and smartphones
- The most of Laptop computers
- Some Desktop computers
- Media players
- Gaming consoles
- Smart heart rate monitor
- Smart shoes
The Bluetooth has many applications. Check below some of them:
- The control and communication between mobile phone and handsfree headset
- Wireless control and communication between tablets and speakers
- Wireless control and communication between mobile phone and car stereo system
- Wireless networking between computers for small transfers in close distance
- Replacement for wired serial cable RS-232 for GPS receivers, bar code scanners, traffic control devices and medical equipment
- For control instead of infrared
- Game consoles for wireless controllers
How Bluetooth Works?
After finding out what is Bluetooth, let me show you how it works. It uses the same frequency spectrum as WiFi, the 2.4 GHz. The technology used for Bluetooth wireless transfer is a frequency hopping spread spectrum. It uses 79 frequency channels.

The Bluetooth uses the master-slave system, where one master can communicate with maximum of seven slaves. All devices in Bluetooth wireless network use the same master clock. The device who initiates a wireless connection is the master. The devices can switch roles from master to slaves and from slave to master.
Bluetooth was invented by Ericsson in 1994 for wireless alternative for RS-232 cables. The Bluetooth is based on the standard IEEE 802.15.1. The standard is no longer maintained.
Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). SIG is responsible for development of the specifications and management of the qualification programs.
What is Bluetooth – the Conclusion
The Bluetooth is on the market since 1994, but it is not so popular as WiFi and other wireless technologies. A similar technology to Bluetooth have emerged lately – NFC (Near Field Communications). It is a big question, are these the last days of the Bluetooth technology?
